Knitted Diary 2018 Update

I’ve been distracted for a while now, largely because I knew this fantastic news, but wasn’t allowed to share it and now it’s out there in the big wide world, I find I have other things on my mind.

My baby is going to have a baby – SQUEEEEEEEEEEL!!!!!!!

18 weeks 2 days today to be exact.

I can’t tell you how long I’ve been waiting to hear that I’m going to be a nan.  Years and then some and now it’s finally happening, I feel a little like a rabbit caught in the headlights.  It’s brought up things I wasn’t expecting and it’s got me thinking about loved ones that aren’t here to share in my joy.

I don’t do maudlin (except on New Year’s Eve, when I allow myself if necessary) and to be honest it’s thrown me a little.  This is like the best of news ever and all I keep thinking of is my dad (he died in an accident 18 years ago).  These feelings will pass I know, but for now, everything is a little raw once again.

So in a bid to get back on track, I’ve got my game face on and am fully embracing the next issue of Olann and – due to be published in September, it’s timed to coincide with the arrival of Deirdre’s bay girl (panic stations!).  I’m working my way through the list of wip’s I shared in my Makers Anonymous Post and I’ve also had a realisation that my grandbaby, due on New Years Day, could provide the perfect excuse for me to put my Knitted Diary to one side, never to see the light of day again.

That simply can’t happen

I won’t let it

Especially now (I’d decided I eventually want to make three Knitted Diaries, one for each of my children to represent a year in my life.  They can hang it in their downstairs loo for all I care)

I have been so good, we’re eight months into 2018 and I’ve kept up with the knitting part, but until last week I’d only sewn four of the five strips for January.

The rest of it looked like this (no surprises there right?)

Worse still, I hadn’t even grouped the months together, so that was the first job that needed doing.  Am I grateful I had decided to colour in a calendar when I started?

Now, I can happily report, that I’ve got four months in total sewn up.  That means I’ve still a few to go until I’m all caught up, but I’m trying to do at least one strip a day.  I’m going to block the months individually and then probably knot the ends before trimming as it’s not going to get the same kind of wear and tear you’d expect in a garment.

I’ve also got to knit the ivory ends (for mounting) on the first two strips for February and work a border on January.  Fingers crossed though, the diary won’t be languishing for too long after we say goodbye to 2018 and on the plus side, my 2019 is going to be a year unlike any other before.

Now if I could only stop myself from looking at all the baby knits long enough to concentrate on getting through my current wip’s.

It’s the Yarnfolk Festival of Wool this weekend and I’m seriously considering leaving my purse at home.

(Like that’s going to happen.)

Happy Making

  1. Congratulations – though I’m sure you had announced it earlier… or maybe I got confused with another baby post. I think it’s normal to think of someone near and dear to us when we have happy news that you wish they could also be a part of. Best wishes to your daughter and hopefully the pregnancy hormones haven’t taken too much of a toll.

Some quick cute little booties, an aviatrix hat and puerpenium cardigan are just the right quick knits for a New Year’s baby. Oh and a blanket… Bounce or Marley from Tin Can Knits come to mind or a pretty chevron or squishy garter block garter. Happy planning and knitting.

    • Thank you so much for taking the time to write. it so strange how much I’m still desperate to tell him things even after it’s been so long. I know he’d be tickled pink at the thought of being a Great-Grandpa. I know he’s with us and I cherish the time we had together.

Baby Knits wise, I’m having trouble containing my excitement now I know it’s a little boy. Hopefully, my latest batch of Olann and smaples will knit up quick and I can then cast on all the things.

      Take care
